Thiruvananthapuram: Azerbaijan, a former member of the Soviet Union, is fast becoming a popular tourist spot for Malayalis. Unlike European countries, Azerbaijan offers facilities at a cheaper cost, and the visa process is less tiresome. Tour operators in the state have identified it to be a top destination for Malayalis interested in budget-friendly vacations.
Usually, the months from April to October are the most favoured time of the year for travel in the country. During this period, small groups of travellers from Kerala board flights to Azerbaijan every day. During November, travellers flock to the country to witness the snowy climate. Tour operators said that Malayalis are sent via Dubai or Doha airports to Azerbaijan. It is also easier to receive a visa in Azerbaijan compared to other European countries.
Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, located near the Caspian sea, is the most popular destination for travellers. Large wide roads, mediaeval walled old city buildings, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a vast royal complex, and the iconic stone Maiden Tower are some of the popular destinations to see here.
A three-night stay, including travel costs, food, and accommodation, could cost around Rs 80,000. For five days, the cost will be around Rs 90,000. However, the cost is comparatively much lesser compared to other popular tourist spots in Europe.
